Rush West Series / Paintings from 2005-06

Upon returning from a long stay abroad, I've decided to sort things out in my studio. I had just finished reading two books about Lotti Latrous (she later won “Woman of the year 2004 award” in Switzerland) who works with the poor and sick on the Ivory Coast in Africa. Her humble approach to life (she owns 5 white t-shirts and 5 pair of jeans) inspired me. I've decided to use things that I already have in my studio like stretcher bars from old paintings. I borrowed toys from my son to paint with. I discovered my color pencils hidden in a box to draw with. I squeezed ink directly onto the canvas and made prints with an old stamp pad. The title “Rush West” is a composite of the words Gold Rush and Wild West (referring to where I choose to live).
